Great Book!!!

I am loving this book!!

A very good friend of mine suggested this book for me and I have just been totally blown away by it.

I love the way this author writes. He's just so identifiable. He brings these "what if" type of questions that really get you thinking. I am just eating this book up. I'll be bringing this book up again with my home group to read together as a group. It's just awesome.

I don't want to give too much detail here, but one thing that I thought was just really cool that the author writes about was how the religious leaders in Jesus' day rejected him because He didn't fit their idea of what their messiah was supposed to look like; and especially with whom Jesus associated with.

Likewise, the author brings it ahead to the second coming and what that would look like to us today. We all know what the Scriptures say, but what I thought was interesting was that he(the author) writes what we may have imagined that to look like. It's not hard to imagine the King of Kings and Lord of Lords riding through the clouds on his stallion and the trumpets blaring. The author writes this:

"But what if the guys playing the horns turned out to be a few men playing on a street corner in a small town in Arkansas, and what if the horse Jesus rode on wasn't a Kentucky thoroughbred, but a belligerent donkey? And what if Jesus, after He got here, frequented homeless shelters and bars and ate and drank with the kinds of cultures evangelicals have declared war against? And what if, when He came like a thief in the night, He came very quietly so that nobody noticed, and what if, crime of all crimes, He was ugly and when He went on CNN producers were uncomfortable with His appearance and only shot Him from the waist up, in a certain light? And what if, when He answered questions, He talked with a hick accent, and only spoke in parables that nobody could understand, and what if He didn't align Himself with a political party, and what if He didn't kiss anybody's butt?"

He goes on and on, but I just was wowed by this. I mean it really gets you thinking. It did for me anyway. There is so much more amazing things in this book, I could go on and on, but I don't want to ruin it for you. Go read it. You wont be disappointed.

Awesome. Will be checking it out. Currently reading "Misquoting Jesus", which is about how the Bible has been changed, inadvertently and purposefully, over time.

I noticed you are in Vacaville, CA. Do you happen to attend where Graham Cooke speaks? My wife and I have followed his ministry and enjoyed listened to some of his teaching for years.

Candace~

Thanks for the recommendation.

Missing you.....

Susie~

Perfect! Great reading for your trip.

Michelle~

I know. I don't want to miss it. I don't want to be like the religious leaders were. I want to see Him in all His glory, whatever that may look like. :)

Vicki~

Great! I know you'll enjoy it.

Jeff~

Thanks for your post. The book you're reading sounds awesome too!

I don't know who Graham Cooke is but I googled his name and found that he speaks at The Mission, here in Vacaville. Right now we are not attending church in the "traditional" sense. We get together with a few other families a couple times a week to share, ask questions, love each other, and basically try to learn how to live the life of Christ through His Word, and spread the Good News within our communitity and with all whom we come into contact with.

I do like to listen to new teachings. I like Rob Bell of Mars Hill a lot. I'll defintely look into Graham Cooke as well.

Thanks for sharing and please, come back again :)
